"Smoking outside the hospital"

About: University Hospital Monklands

(as a service user),

I pass by monklands hospital the entrance to the renal unit every morning on my way to work around 7am, and most mornings there is a group of staff wearing green uniforms smoking at this entrance! I feel as a member of the public this doesn't give very good impression of the hospital. I realise there is no smoking on hospital grounds but I think when staff gather in groups especially in their uniform is not an acceptable standard for a hospital which has worked so hard to improve its reputation and is doing a wonderful job!

Dear Airdrie patient,

Thank you for taking the time to communicate to us.

I fully understand your concerns and NHSL share your views and have a “No Smoking Policy” in place. The Policy not only addresses smoking within the hospital building and grounds, but also included that staff should not be smoking while in uniform. Any individual indentified is subject to formal action.

We have had new signs and posters installed, along with a smoking detection system in staff changing rooms, which when activated on call site manager, carries a page and is the responder.

We are looking to introduce “smoking patrols” and a rota is being produced, to trial this concept.

Thank you also for your very kind words

Regards

Margaret
