"A&E great but the Fracture Clinic fails to impress..."

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

I have mixed feelings about Treliske now. A month ago, I would have given it a high rating, but I have to say that a few members of staff have been rather disappointing, which is rather a shame. The A&E staff were fantastic after I broke a bone in my back. The doctor was amazing and kind, but I wasn't as impressed with the nurse who failed to come back to tell me it was okay to go to the X-ray department, leaving us waiting to hear whether or not to go for over an hour. The first doctor I saw in the fracture clinic was lovely, helpful and polite. However, the nurse wasn't. I mean, after all, how dare I have the audacity to ask for a sick note after having broken a bone? Who in their right mind would think such a thing was reasonable? Surely not! Unfortunately, the follow up appointment was rather laughable. After having waited in the hospital for about an hour, I had a 2 minute (yes, I did time it) appointment with the doctor, who asked me about the pain, and then didn't acknowledge a word I said. The doctor said (and I quote), "We don't do backs here, so if there are any further problems, you'll have to go to Derriford. You need to ask your gp any questions you have about your recovery. Here is your discharge note. Take it to reception. Goodbye." I didn't even have a chance to ask any questions before I was dismissed! The doctor walked away before I could even pick up my handbag, and was with his next patient before I could pick my jaw off the floor and leave the cubicle. I was shocked. When I spoke to my gp about it in order to ask the questions I wanted answered (after all, again, why on earth would I have questions about whether or not the pain was normal after breaking a bone and tearing ligaments?), who said that it sounded like an orthopaedic surgeon. And I suppose, what do I know? The fact that I would expect a doctor to stay long enough to allow me to ask questions or even to show enough interest to examine the injury, I suppose, is a failing on the part of every other doctor I've ever seen. They had falsely set me up for the expectation that the doctor would care enough to speak to me, not at me. And my gp, I think, has totally ruined me for any other doctor because my gp is the best gp I've ever had, even going to the point of phoning me to check on my recovery whilst off work. But, hey, like I said, what do I know? I'm not an orthopaedic surgeon!
