"Fiollow up to my visit to A&E with my young son"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital

I picked up a voicemail message earlier asking me to contact the department as they would like to see my son in the orthopaedic fracture clinic. I contacted the A&E department and apparently my son's x-ray has been reviewed by the Consultant Radiologist, who has requested that he be followed up in the orthopaedic fracture clinic as something has been noted from reviewing the x-ray. I am very disappointed as I made a specific point of asking the Nurse Practitioner on the day that he attended originally if he would need to be followed up and I received an emphatic 'No'. In addition, the Nurse Practitioner did not 'buddy strap' his toe in spite of me asking if this should be done but again received an emphatic 'No'. My reason for asking this was because when he was originally triaged by one of the other nurses, who advised that he had more than likely fractured his toe, which would not require an x-ray but would need strapping by the Nurse Practitioner. I feel that my son has very much been let down by the sub-standard level of care that he received from this particular Nurse Practitioner. On a positive note, I would like to say that all of the other members of staff that we saw were excellent. In particular, the radiographer that performed the x-ray of my son's foot who was wonderful and had a really caring and friendly attitude towards my son. I feel that the Nurse Practitioner could learn a lot from the radiographer about how to treat children with care, compassion and empathy. Also, the receptionist on A&E that I spoke to tonight was also a credit to your trust.

Thank you for your post and I am relieved that your son is to be appropriately reviewed by the fracture clinic after his x-ray was reviewed by a senior clinician. I'm replying here because our clinical staff don't have access to the site's administrative pages - but rest assured I will pass on your comments about the nurse practitioner's approach so it can be shared for learning. I am of course really pleased to read your comments about the radiographer and receptionist and I hope this gave you some assurance about your son's care. I hope he's on the mend and soon back to running around! Kind regards Sarah Turner-Saint head of communications
