"Aftercare?"

About: Oaklands Hospital

My mum was admitted for a foot fusion last Summer, following a hip and knee replacement a couple of years earlier. On the positive side, mum did not have to wait very long for her operation. The negative side was the aftercare – or lack of it. She was discharged from Oaklands and was in plaster for 12 weeks. She received no information from the hospital about what to expect following surgery. The only follow up she had was 6 months later when the consultant said the operation had been a success and she could lead a ‘normal life’. This has not been the case – the foot fusion has made no difference to mum’s lack of mobility. One year on, she still has difficulty walking, still relies on a crutch and has pain in her foot where the fusion took place. Her GP does not want to know. She had such high hopes that this operation would enable her to walk pain-free, but the situation is worse now than ever and there is nothing she can do. Very disappointing – would not deal with Oaklands again.
