What could be improved

Increased number of nurses on the ward.

More thoughtfulness/sensitivity/care by nursing staff could be given to post operative patients.

At night time it would be less difficult to sleep if the nursing staff and doctors could keep their chatting noise down.

A greater awareness of elderly patients who cannot feed themselves - I witnessed an elderly lady on my ward having her food/drink put in front of her and taken away again later every day. Nobody seemingly had time to help her to eat, or sit and talk with her. Frightening.

Anything else?

After an operation for prolapsed womb I was left in a wet and bloody bed/gown for many hours.

Nursing staff seemed very scarce; I seldom saw a nurse on the ward. I had a tube in my arm so moving was difficult, also I had a catheta and a lot of "internal packing" which was leaking. I felt weak and vulnerable. When a nurse eventually responded to my call, I asked for some help to clean myself up - a bowl of water was put in front of me and I was left to it. I felt very alone, and I just wept (something I rarely do)

I am normally a very strong independent person but this situation reduced me to an emotional wreck. In the event my husband took time off work and spent the daytimes on the ward with me.

The QEH is my local hospital but I have a huge phobia about it now and would never willingly be a patient there again.
