"Hand surgery (Orthopaedics) and Pain Management"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary

I had a trapeziectomy on 22nd June and was a day-patient in Ward 5. It was my first time as a patient at BRI and I have to say my experience was a really positive one. Although the staff during admission were very busy, they were very willing to take time and explain when I asked questions about 'what was going to happen next'. My surgeon was amazing - it's hard to 'trust' someone you've only met twice, but their calm manner and attention to detail just gave me so much confidence. The surgery went really well, and two weeks post-op, there's been no pain, virtually no swelling, the stitches are out and all is going well. The other amazing person was my anaesthetist, who was very supportive, explaining what they were doing, asking me what I wanted (I opted for a regional block) - they really made me feel involved and made me feel like I had some control during the procedure. Their banter kept me distracted through the tense moments, they were quick to give me medication when I felt sick - in short, they were instrumental in helping me 'keep it together' during the surgery. Being awake during the surgery, I saw first hand the stresses and pressures both these medical professionals are under. What is so great about them, is that they both gave me such excellent care, first and foremost. Please say a heart-felt 'thank you' to them for me.

It will give me great pleasure to say a heartfelt thank you to the team. Thank you for taking the time to post your comments; it is good to hear that you were reassured and given confidence for the surgery and that the anaesthetist helped you to feel in control and better able to cope with the procedure. This will be shared with the teams, thank you.
