During my stay on the HDU nurses were talking to each other in a foreign language whilst they were hovering near my bedside. They didn't even acknowledge me as a human being let alone a patient in their care. A cup of tea was brought to me but was not offered breakfast lunch was placed before me hours later but was inedible. Why on earth are hospitals still being built in the 21st century without kitchens. The outsourcing of catering under flawed PFI contracts is not only draining the resources of the NHS, but is having an adverse affect in the recovery pathway. Evidence supports the correlation of healthy freshly cooked wholesome food and rapid recovery leading to quicker discharge from the ward thereby saving money. But more than that it means you are treating patients as valued guests and not stripping them of their dignity
