"The ambulance staff were trully ..."

About: James Paget University Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

The ambulance staff were trully amazing and so was the trainee doctor and nurse who reviewed my case when I entered through A & E. When I was put onto ward 7 the majority of the staff were helpfull but not all. The agency staff were really respectfull, unlike some of the full time staff, they were helpful and treated me as a fully functioning person not as some of the other staff treated me, as someone who is not all there. I was in pain but my brain was working. The staff who served the meals were on the whole very caring and one in particular helped me to regain my appetite through care and patience and I thank her very much.

What could be improved

When the doctors do their rounds could they spoke to the patient infofrming them of what is happening - it is done in other hospitals - Addenbrooks and NNUH are amazing in that area. Also when family members phone, can the messages given be relayed to the patient. Also instead of reading off the paperwork they have, can they really find out how the patient is. I understand that they are very busy but to have to wait over 25 minutes to be taken to the loo is rediculous. I waited for nearly 1 and a half hours until my daughter came in to wheel me into the loo. When she questioned this she was told it was their responsibility to clean up any mess made, what I have not done in over 77 years I am not likely to do now. I have my self respect and my pride and to be put into a "nappy" at my time of life is so demoralizing, especially at a time when I was at my lowest in confidence. Can the staff transferring the patients from ward to ward please explain what is happening and why and to what kind of a ward we are being taken to, instead of just leaving the patient there alone and worried. As you can see I am talking specifically about older patients as this is my experience, just because we have "snow on the roof" does not mean there is "no fire in the hearth"!!!!!

Anything else?

I had a partial hip replacement in December 2008 and todate I have not had a followup - call that care?
