"Patient being let down by psychiatric services"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Mental Health (Wards 19 &20) University Hospital Wishaw / General Medicine (Wards 5 & 8)

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was detained in Hairmyres psychiatric ward as he was so unwell he was a danger to himself. Whilst still unwell, however not on constant observation he asked to get out to the shops at ten to eleven at night. It was explained to him the shops were closed but he was allowed out anyway. 40 minutes later the ward phone to say he had not returned at 11 when the ward was locked and asked for his mobile number. He was eventually found in the centre of Glasgow by police in the early hours of the next morning and taken to the police station before being returned to Wishaw General for care. The nurse was more concerned that I was being hostile than anything else on the phone. I was indeed angry at my son being let down and very concerned about the welfare of my son. She actually said she was surprised I was hostile. Have to say I more more than surprised a severly ill young adult with minimal insight was allowed out at that time of night, while on detention.
