"Haemotology - blood infusion"

I am writing this on behalf of my mother (the patient) and myself (the patients daughter). Yesterday, I supported my mother to attend her first blood infusion at Royal Cornwall Hospital. This was a much needed service that has been long sought after. By this I mean that my mother has been suffering with low iron levels for many years but been 'stuck' in the same cycle of being issued with ferrous sulphate tablets (which make her vomit) and dietary information (that she cannot follow due to IBS and personal life choices such as being a vegetarian). Her quality of life had been affected for many years to the point that she was now so low in iron that she was unable to walk without feeling breathless, rest without wanting to drop to sleep or concentrate without experiencing headaches which often led to migraines. She is only in her 60's. We were greeted by the blood conservation co ordination (and nurse) who immediately made my mother feel at ease. They xplained the process that would follow ensuring that she knew the procedure and the reason for its purpose. We were both educated and comforted in this knowledge. The procedure was straight forward and painless. A drip was fed into my mothers hand which lasted approximately an hour. Observations were carried out every 15 minutes and information shared throughout. I cannot relay the results yet, as it is too soon to know the benefits but we are hopeful for a positive outcome.
