"All staff that I met were professional ..."

About: Broomfield Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

All staff that I met were professional and superb. This covers porters, nurses, surgeons, anaesthetists, doctors and support staff. I was consulted at all stages. The colorectoral nurses were particularly helpful, and continue to be so. The anaesthetic team almost made it seem like a party and put my fears nearly to rest. Everyone worked hard to overcome the dreadful management systems imposed uopn them, see below, and had to go out of their way to ensure that I was treated as planned and to overcome the obstacles put in their way. The follow up system is working and is well designed and executed by the colectoral staff.

The surgeon even rang the ward the day before the surgery to ensure that I had been given correct eating instructions as I suspect he remembered a question I had asked him. I was lucky to be able to have keyhole surgery and recovery was rapid and care in Broomfield by the ward staff could not be faulted Many thanks to you all.

What could be improved

As mentioned above, the management systems that I encountered were poor. The failures ranged from an appointment of which I was not advised except to be told that it was cancelled and re-scheduled! When I went for the appointment I was not actually required. My pre-med was not scheduled because there was not a space, this despite the surgeon, operating theatre and bed having been reserved. Luckily a phone call ensured that I was pushed in. The ward knew that I was coming but had a different plan from that given to me and I was operated on hours earlier than planned.

It seems to me that the staff were used to having to go outside the system to make things work.

As a retired engineer iwith a large organisation responsible for improvement for many years I suspect that the systems were designed without proper involvement of those actually involved in executing them. There is probably a great deal of measurement but of the wrong things.

Broomfield is fortunate to have such good medical and medical support staff.

Anything else?

The building work is making parking extremely difficult but the parking attendants do try to help. Please try to find further spaces.
