"Day surgery unit staff - efficient, ..."

About: Hinchingbrooke Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Day surgery unit staff - efficient, caring, and supportive of me when things didn't go quite as expected with my proceedure.

Booking nurse who came in and checked on me after the proceedure and who put me at ease by talking with me about being one of the colonials working in the NHS (I am one too!)

Consultant was great while I was in theatre and came round afterwards to explain what had not gone to plan and what the plan was for follow-up care. He also put me into an outpatient clinic list with a shorter waiting time even if it is not the "right" clinic for my proceddure.

His registrars who were both friendly and attentive but respectful of my privacy and personal space.

The anaethetist who understood I really was scared and told me exactly what she was doing every time she did something.

The nurse who despite not being my nominated nurse who coped with me vomiting once I was back on the ward and found me a fan to cool me down.

Nurse who cared for me who made me laugh when we were heading down to theatre, which helped me relax. She was also very reassuring about my post-operative blood loss.

Lovely nurse who was so much more gentle than my GP giving mye my goserin depot shot!

Nice discharge nurse who checked I understood my aftercare thoroughly, even though she knew I was a health worker myself.

What could be improved

Althought I understand that they all have to check and double check, I got asked the same pre-operative questions 7 times.

White bread cheese sandwiches fortunately taste great after 14 hours fasting, but can we have a choice of wholemeal and some vegetable matter in the sandwich as well!

Small lockers in the day unit pods so we can bring a mobile phone - so much easier than trying to remember my partners number!

Anything else?

I know I will probably be back in the same unit for a repeat proceedure, and will go there far more relaxed and happy about the admission than I was this time around.

The NHS is short staffed and underfunded, but the staff I've encountered are doing a great job all things considered.

I'm proud to be an NHS staff member after this experience - and as a (junior) part of management I am delighted to see this level of care given all the changes we are going through.
