"Felt dismissed"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Rheumatology (Joint conditions)

(as the patient),

I had an appointment with a rheumatologist at main hospital. I had to travel by bus which took over an hour. I arrived promptly and was called after a couple of minutes. The rheumatologist then told me they had a student with them, never asked if it was ok. The doctor was rather aloof & cold, when I mentioned pain in my shoulders, wrists & thumbs they had a quick look at my hands & said they couldnt see any inflammation, just to carry on with my medication & I would be seen in 6 months. No proper examination, I never even got to take my jacket off. I felt totally dismissed and like I was wasting their time. The nursing staff are always patient and cheerful, shame this consultant wasnt

Dear patient

I am so sorry that you have had a disappointing experience at your consultation and that you felt dismissed. It would be normal practice to seek permission for a student to be present during an appointment. Our aim is to be a caring, listening and improving organisation and so I thank you for taking the time to post this feedback.

It is great to hear that our nurses are doing a good job and that you find them to be patient and cheerful.

I will pass your feedback on to the rheumatology department and ask them to provide a reponse to your post.

Kind regards,

Dear Linda,

Thank you for your response to my post. Its nice to know that someone has read it and taken notice.

I never usually complain about anything but I felt strongly that I and other patients deserve to be treated with a bit of kindness & a smile. I appreciate that the consultants work incredibly hard and see many patients every day, but they should remember we are human beings with feelings not just a patient number.

Regards
