I attended A & E with my elderly father whom I suspected had signs/symptoms of Giant Cell Arteritis/Temporal Arteritis which is a medical emergency. After being given low priority to be seen, a very rude & confrontational nurse, who didn't even introduce them self, quickly disagreed with my suspected diagnosis & said it couldn't be that & referred us to Primary Care to be seen by the Dr there. This nurse clearly made us feel as though we were wasting their time. Fortunately, the Dr we then saw who was very good instantly came up with the same suspected diagnosis as myself & prescribed the appropriate emergency treatment and made further arrangements for urgent referral. It would be advisable this particular Triage nurse is given further training in this area & reminded of basic communication skills & good patient care. They clearly lacked basic knowledge, even after being given the classic signs/symptoms of this condition. This nurse certainly did not exercise good patient care on this occasion.
