I found my husband almost unconscious due to hypoglycaemia. He was not responding to my voice and I could not administer any oral sugar or glucose as he could not swallow.
We live in a fairly remote area, so having called 999 and receiving some very welcome advice from the controller, I was heartened that a local Responder (John) managed to get to us in about 5 minutes, whilst the Paramedic was on his way. Although my husband has had insulin dependent diabetes for almost 50 years and we have been married for over 40, it was still an incredibly frightening experience and I was extremely grateful for John's reassuring company whilst we waited for the Paramedic.
The Paramedic (Richard) arrived within the next 15 minutes and was able to quickly assess the situation, administer IV glucose and within a fairly short space of time, my husband became fully conscious. Richard had a calm authoritative manner and I felt completely confident in his ability to help my husband.
Both my husband and myself are deeply grateful to Richard and John and the emergency services controller who dealt with our particular emergency in a calm, compassionate and very caring way. I'm very proud of our NHS.
