"Some extremely good and some equally bad..."

About: The Great Western Hospital

After being referred by my GP, I was given an appointment for the 14th May 2015 to see a specialist in the GWH opthalmology department. I had a persistent itchy eye, with redness and sticky discharge. The doctor I saw didn't ask me any questions when explained my symptoms, quietly examined the eyes and said they look healthy and that I don't I have any problem. The doctor thought it was dry eyes and prescribed a lubricating dye drop called Hylo Forte and a gel called Vitapose. In the pharmacy I was told that the supply of Vitapose has been stopped due to manufacturing issues and asked to get an alternate prescription. I bought the Hylo Forte and started to use. This made the problem even worse as the stickyness became even severe. Meanwhile I had phoned the hospital to get an alternative to Vitapose, a nurse suggested Lubristil. I requested for a prescription. I went to the hospital again on the evening of 22nd May to collect this prescription. My eye was terribly bad all that day with constant sticky discharge throughout the day. When I collected the prescription,I told the receptionist about the issues I was having with the Hylo Forte and asked if I could speak to someone for advise. The receptionist was trying to get a nurse to speak to me. Luckily there was a doctor who said they could see me if I waited for an hour, which I did. The doctor looked at the eyes thoroughly, asked loads of questions about the symptoms. Then they turned my top eye lid inside out and looked behind the eye lid and said that is where all the problem could be seen and that I had an allergic conjunctivitis. There were inflammations behind the eye lid which was causing the sticky discharge and itchiness. They disagreed with whatever the previous doctor had said and prescribed steroid eye drop and antihistamine eye drops. The doctor even took a picture of the back of my eye lid in my phone and explained to me what exactly the problem was. I started using these new drops from the very next day and I could start to feel better within few days and now it's been 3 weeks and don't have any stickiness or itchiness or redness. I had the problem for over 2 years and for the first time I feel a lot better. I would like to express my sincere thanks to this doctor who kindly agreed to see me even when I didn't have an appointment, examined thoroughly, diagnosed correctly, I felt relieved and confident as they were able to make me understand what the actual problem was, they even explained that the eye pressure could be affected with the steroids and hence recommended a follow up appointment. They were an on-call doctor that day. On the other hand I'm really shocked that the previous doctor who I saw didn't even look behind the eye lids, hardly asked any questions about the symptoms, confidently said there is no problem and even prescribed a medication that made it worse. I've my follow up appointment on the 16th June and I'm hoping that I don't get seen by the earlier doctor who gave me lubricants.
