"I've gone from being a pauper to a princess!"

About: Ayrshire Hospice Crosshouse Hospital

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I'd been in and out of hospital for a while then was managed by district nurses, back in hospital and now I'm in the hospice. I can't fault any of my care. The support in hospital is great considering the resources. District nurses were great.

I was transferred to the hospice last Friday and it is another level - I've gone from being a pauper to a princess! When I arrived I hadn't had a proper wash for 5 days or been able to wash my hair as I have a pump and was told in hospital that I couldn't have a bath. When I arrived here they said 'of course you can have a bath', my hair was washed and I had a haircut. When my family came to visit me later I was a different person.

I was watching the nurses earlier working with a lady in my room and everything was done so lovingly and patiently - it was like a friend doing something for another friend.

I have never felt like a number here, it's homely and safe. My concerns are listened to; there is a lovely chef who has been helping to get my portions right so I'm not overwhelmed at mealtimes.

You do not lose your dignity here at all

Thank you for taking time to comment on care opinion. It’s good to hear that you’ve felt supported by both the hospital and district nurse teams before coming to the hospice.

I’m glad we were able to offer you a bath, hair wash and haircut during your stay in the hospice inpatient unit. This is such an important part of care and you have used a lovely analogy to describe your feelings of going from a “pauper to princess.”

I have passed on to the nursing team that you observed care being delivered so lovingly and patiently and of course I’ll let our catering team know that you appreciated the time spent getting your food portions just right.

We appreciate all comments received as it’s important for us to continually evaluate our service and make today matter.

Thanks again

Shona

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Gilfg5,

Thank you so much for contacting us and letting us know about your care. I will share this with the Community Nursing Team and the Managers in Crosshouse to take to their staff.

It is so important to get great care specific to our needs and it sounds as if this is absolutely the case and it is so good to hear.

Best wishes,

Eunice
