"I went in to a&E with what ..."

About: Ealing Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I went in to a&E with what i thought was severe menstrual pain. I discovered at the hospital i was pregnant and was told that further tests would need to be done to see if it was an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. I did not have wait to long in A & E to be seen and the doctor delaing with me was polite, sensitive and helpful. He was taking his time and being considerate towards me. I was given immediate pain releif.

What could be improved

Better interaction between A&E and other departments/staff. I was not able to be given a scan as i was told there is not ultrasound staff on weekends - i went in a little past midnight on early hours of sat and was not given a scan until Tues. I was told to visit EPU on Mon and did, but after waiting 4 hours in pain was told to go home. There was no consideration given that i was an emergency, over routine appoitnments.

Anything else?

A need to differentiate between an emergency and routine situations that can wait for certain treatments, and others that need urgent attention/review. In this case, the hospital failed. By the time i was given a scan i had miscarried the pregnancy altogther.
