"Stroke Rehab ward over the Christmas period"

About: Southmead Hospital

My mother was moved to the Stroke Rehab ward during the night of Sunday 21st December 2014. We had originally arranged to take her home between Xmas Eve and Sunday 28th December as none of the therapists were working over that period but we were told this was not possible. Instead over that week she deteriorated by the day despite us visiting each day and pointing this out to the staff 'on duty'. Eventually notice was taken when she had another 'episode' and she was diagnosed with a chest infection which led to three bouts of pneumonia and her ultimate death. Skeleton staffing, 'bank nursing' and no continuity of care was at fault. Once her condition was recognised and regular staff were back on duty she did receive excellent care and concern from her doctor, occupational therapist and nurses but it was too late. Unless you need active medical attention do not be in hospital over a holiday period!! ??

Dear Janet, Thank you for taking the time and trouble to provide your comments. I am very sorry to hear that your mother’s health deteriorated over the holiday period. Whilst will feed this back to the Stroke team so that they are aware of your comments and the problems your mother experienced. It would be helpful if you contact us so that we can look into this matter further, as it is important that the bank staff that had been employed to work on the ward should have been able to ensure that your mother’s care was not compromised in any way. If you would like to call us on 0117 323710 we will take further details from you. Kind Regards, Sue Needs, Advice & Complaints Team.
