"some staff need better staff to patient skills"

About: South Tyneside District Hospital

my partner was at a maternity scan last week and the scanning nurse was not very respectful to my partner and her kids. They were very abrupt in speaking and rough during the scan, leaving my partner with a bruise and pains. They upset the other children with the way they spoke when they asked if it was a boy or girl. all they had to say was its not possible to tell or something. instead of being abrupt. if this nurse doesn't like children then they are in the wrong department. also this week my partner was at her consultant appointment and they were very disrespectful with the way they spoke and made her feel. one bad staff member experience once is bad enough but two in a week is unacceptable. think some staff should be sent on training course about patient / customer skills and treat people with respect. if it was a patient who spoke to a member of staff that way they would not stand for if, so why is it acceptable the other way round.

Dear Martin Thank you for taking the time to post on the NHSS Choices website your recent experience of our Maternity services. I am very disappointed to hear of your experience during your partner’s recent visits to Maternity at South Tyneside District Hospital. This is certainly not what we expect of our staff when they are communicating with patients and/or their relatives. I will ensure your comments are brought to the attention of the respective managers to ensure staff are reminded of their duty of care to our patients, which includes effective communication. Should you wish this matter to be formally investigated, please contact me at South Tyneside District Hospital, Harton Lane, South Shields NE34 0PL or by email at lorraine.lambert@stft.nhs.uk In the interim period, I sincerely hope the remainder of your partner’s pregnancy goes to plan and she gives birth to a fit and healthy baby. Kind regards Lorraine B Lambert Chief Executive.
