"Charged for copies of Xrays at Addenbrooke's Hospital"

About: Addenbrooke's Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I had an xray of my hips at Addenbrooke's Hospital this afternoon. I had been advised by an orthopaedic surgeon the day before I left New Zealand that it would be a good idea to get such an Xray. Had I had this done privately via the Accident Compensation Corporation (www.acc.co.nz) it would have cost NZ$25 to me and taken about 10 min. Here I waited half an hour and tripped over the childrens' toys on my way to the Xray. I asked about getting a copy of the Xray to take back to NZ and was told it would cost 30 pounds and to fill in a form at the front desk. It took two people to take the Xray. I already have a hip replacement so this is not new to me. I read that NHS hospital patients are not allowed to buy their own cancer drugs that the NHS "can't afford." The reverse ie charging me for a simple Xray taking 2min at most - seems totally contradictory. Patients (sorry "customers") cannot pay for their own drug treatment which the NHS cannot "afford" but I am expected to pay for my own Xray referred by a GP. Totally nuts.
