"I was hoping for help, but I just feel angry and upset"

About: Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health

(as the patient),

I was referred by my GP to have an initial assessment here as she felt my mental health needed urgent attention from something more stable than the crisis phone lines.

During my assessment I felt that because I was a student, the assessor had already decided that my studies were the cause of my problems and that I was just suffering "mid-degree blues". This was 'decided' after a five minute rant from her on how she felt when studying for a degree and then I asked if I thought that's what I had which I thought was a bit too much of a leading question and I felt uncomfortable to disagree with her. I felt extremely patronised when she said "you know university is supposed to be hard right? " as if I did not understand what getting a degree entailed.

I also ended up in a debate about terminology with her as she was trying to get me to say which of the two terms applied to me. She did not explain the difference and when I finally worked out which one applied to me she said it was the other one.

I was hoping to gain a better idea of what could be put in place to help me in the future but instead I just feel angry and upset.

Dear purplehatter

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Patient Opinion. I am disappointed to hear about your experience and that you were left feeling angry and upset. That is definitely not the experience we would want people who access our services to feel.

Unfortunately, with the little information we have from your posting it is difficult for me to investigate how best to help you, I wonder if you might feel able to give me some details about where you were seen and which service it was? That way I can better understand what happened and hopefully, prevent this from happening to anyone else.

If you do feel able to do this then please contact either myself on 0113 85 55955 or our PALS service would be able to offer some support and advice on 0800 0525790 or e-mail pals.lypft@nhs.net

Kind Regards

Clare Blackburn
