About: Broomfield Hospital

On the 15/05/15 I had a hospital appointment at Broomfield Hospital and had booked a Bariatric ambulance to take me there and return booking which arrived on time with a professional crew and transported me there and into the department I was to visit all good. On my return booking I was told that the transport would be about an hour, so I asked to be put out side the main entrance so as to get some sun shine also it so hot in the Hospital which a porter did, after 2 hours and still no transport I needed a pee so I asked one of the transport ambulance drivers if they could push me back inside he said “no” because I was not their designated job so I asked if they could give me a bottle which they did, I asked them I needed a hand and could he hold the bottle as I cannot stand, pull down the front of my trousers and hold the bottle at the same time, they said “no” left the bottle on the railing and walk away I said could they get someone to come out, but after a while nobody came so being now in pain I tried to do it myself but I could not and wet my self some think I have not done for 60 years! Just then my driver arrived they had to get me back in the wheel chair as I was hyper ventilating and disorientated they got very worried they even phoned 999 but I stopped them as now sitting down I was starting to feel a bit better and I didn’t want to waist a doctors time then they took me to the ambulance were I was told it was not a bariatric but they would get me in ok, then they found the winch was busted and had to find a third crew member to assist which they did. Then the driver radioed their control and explained the problem and I needed to get home now, they were told “no” and to pick up another passenger the driver said again I was in trouble but again they were told “no”, by this time I was turning blue around the lips but the controller still refused permission so we went and collected the other passenger who was dropped of first then it was me next. By the time I got to my home my wife was waiting for me along with a third crew member to assist with unloading me, they waited till I was in bed and to help my wife with me as I had to wait out side 20 minutes on a BIPAP machine to recover and my vision came back a very caring helpful person thank them as well please. The driver did not leave till they see the colour coming back in my lips and I was recovering they also was very caring person thank them as well please. What is bad is I was left out side the Hospital for 2 or more hours in need of a toilet and your so called trained crews I was left to wet myself and in trouble with my breathing very distressing and frightening, I was asked if I had a do not resuscitate order so I was in a bad way, to be given transport home in the wrong type of vehicle with out medical aid nothing more than a taxi!!! 2 days and nights to recover

Thank you for the post on your experience. I am very at the experience you had whilst awaiting transport home after the appointment. I have forwarded your email to the Outpatient Manager and ERS who provide patient transport. Best wishes, Patient Experience Team
