"A & E department"

About: Sandwell General Hospital

I was taken to A&E via ambulance on 12th May, I had severe excruciating pain in my right knee which was badly swollen. I was put into cubicle 11, the bed still had the sheets and blankets from the previous patient, the ambulance staff had to remove them and clean the bed and replenish with clean sheets. I was on morphine and had gas and air to try and cope with the level of pain. There was dried blood on the floor. I was left then until I was sent to x-Ray I had nothing to drink until I was brought a drink of water with two more pain killers I had taken. They said there was nothing broken it could be ligament damage they were not sure. I arrived at hospital and around 8pm and was chucked out at 2.30 am with a pair of crutches. I complained to the Doctors and Nurses that I was unable to properly and safely move about, they said there were no facilities on A&E to do an MRI scan and they would not admit me to the ward so I complained again to the Doctor who then brought in her supervisor who again said there was nothing more they could do. There were five people in my room by this point, two Doctors, I presume one was a physio and two other nursing staff in the doorway and I felt intimidated to say the least so I said I give up and they left the room. I buzzed for my discharge letters was told they would send them to my GP I asked which was the way out they pointed down the corridor and I was left to struggle out. I think a dog would have had better treatment and I think next time would be better visiting a vet.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. I am very sorry to hear about your experience which falls below the standards of care we expect. We would be happy to look into this further to see how we can improve our care and I would be grateful if you could contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service through email at swb-tr.pals@nhs.net who will investigate your concerns.
