"Lack of rehabilitation and physiotherapy in Stroke..."

About: South Tyneside District Hospital

In my experience of my grandparents death in the stroke ward. He received little or no rehabilitation and the only physiotherapy he received were arm massages. He was forcibly confined to his bed for weeks, and staff refused to help him to the toilet or to use a commode. In this way his dignity was not maintained and as a result, his spirit was broken. This ward in my opinion is a terrifying place where only few are chosen to be rehabilitated. They refused him a wheelchair to allow me to take him outside. They said his core stability was not there. Well why did they not have suitable wheelchairs available? The speech therapists also refused him drinks. There were no staff available on weekends and the place was at a standstill. It was easier for them , to immediately put a catheter in and to keep him in his bed, which months later became his death bed when his muscles had wasted due to lack of exercise , and lack of fluids and nutrition.
