"Almost absolutely nothing. Most ..."

About: Chase Farm Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Almost absolutely nothing. Most of Bramley Ward Staff are an utter disgrace to their profession.

My father was hospitalised on 29 June with motor neurone disease. He cannot speak and was asked by a 'special' if my father was a foreigner as he couldn't make himself understood. This amounts to verbal abuse by a staff member. This was witnessed by the patient in the opposite bed and reported to my sister. Nurses was chatting on mobile phones on the ward and ignoring patients. Nurses grouping together on the ward and not speaking English amongst themselves.

My father had 4 falls, one caused a head injury, only 1 fall was recorded. His weight was not recorded, so it wasn't picked up he was losing weight. Staff were rude, rough and abusive, which was echoed amongst other patients and their families.

Calls for the toilet went unheeded, and staff refused to take him.

I was shouted at by a nurse from halfway down the corridor, luckily for her she was that far away. My sister has been spoken to in a discraceful manner by a nurse, which was witnessed by another staff member, who said she would report her. Nothing happened.

My father was given a hand bell to call for a nurse if he needed the toilet. This was not fair on other patients at night. When I queried it with a nurse she said it didn't matter as there was always someone on the ward at night. I asked my father if this was the case, he said not always. When I repeated this to a nurse, she said in a very rude manner that there was someone on duty in the ward all night. This amounted to calling my father a liar. When I checked with another patient, he said that my father was correct in what he was saying, not the nurse.

What could be improved

My first thought is to sack the staff.

Complaints made about staff rudeness should have been acted on immediately.

There should be a senior staff member visable at all times checking on the professionalism of their staff, and the dignity and well being of the patients. This is not happening.

Anything else?

Checking on previous feedback, it appears that I am not the only person to have problems with staff at Chase Farm hospital.

It also appears this aggresiveness by staff members is being left to go unchecked as it is rife within Chase Farm.

There is little point to feedback, if it is not acted on.

Chase Farm hospital has a bad reputation anyway, seeing first hand in action what is happening on one ward I am not in the least bit suprised.

There is no way I would want any of my friends or relatives stepping one foot within that hospital. I would fear for their safety.
