"colonoscopy/inr checks"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / General Medicine

(as a relative),

My wife has, in the course of 2014 undergone chemo and radiotherapy for cancer of the womb and cervix.

After repeated bowel problems a CT scan and colonoscopy were arranged by the staff at Edinburgh Western General. The CT scan showed no cause for concern.

A colonoscopy was arranged for Sunday May 10 2015 and a blood sample (for checking INR) was taken on Saturday May 9 2015 at queen margaret hospital dunfermline

My wife duly went through the "purging" procedure on Sat/Sun and reported to the Queen Margaret on Sun at 1400hrs as arranged, only to be told that her INR reading was too high and that the colonoscopy was being postponed or cancelled

My wife has her INR checked regularly at her GP surgery and is given her INR reading within 1 minute.

My wife was disappointed to have gone through this "purging"procedure unnecessarily and when I made this point to the nurses on duty they told us that their

INR tester could not give "same day" results.

I would have thought that equipment for testing INR would be available to a hospital if a local chemist has it!

SO I CONCLUDE- the hospital should have the equipment to give instant INR results OR they have the equipment and did not respond quickly enough to prevent my wife going through unnecessary discomfort

It should not be difficult to resolve this issue one way or the other

Dear 123gre1gor

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your wife's recent experience, I am so sorry she had to go through such unpleasant preparation only to be told that the procedure could not go ahead. I share your logical thinking and will now seek a specific response to the question posed in your conclusion. I will get back to you once I have that information.

Regards

Louise Ewing
