"The POCU and theatre staff were ..."

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

The POCU and theatre staff were very informative and helpful, making it easy for me to feel confident in the quality of care I would receive during my operation. The majority of the ward staff in Pembroke ward were excellent and professional in the care they gave me.

At all stages prior to my admission, I had clear explanations of what to expect and was confident that I would receive a high standard of medical care.

What could be improved

The food offered was not very appetising and quite tasteless. It was difficult to beleive it was even vaguely nutritious.

I left hospital with some bruising on my lower back due to poor attention given to assisting me when I was unable to do things for myself, I was ignored when I told the attending staff that I was uncomfortable with how they were assisting me. Although in a private room, I was left uncovered and unable to move by myself, in a mixed ward with the door open, while some clean linen was fetched. This was very upsetting to me at the time.

One possible reason for this incident is that there did not appear to be enough staff available on any of the shifts to allow them to complete all of the tasks required of them in caring for a large number of patients.

The general cleanliness of the ward was good, but the light fitting in my room had numerous dead flies in it and the window frame appeared to have some brownish growth along one of the joints. These were not even checked by the ward cleaner or the cleaning supervisor. That was, I think, cause for concern and needs to be addressed when the cleaning procedures are detailed to the cleaners.

Anything else?

Although I had one upsetting incident, the stafff were kind, professional and caring and I would like to thank those in Pembroke ward for that.
