"Wonderful Consultant"

About: Hull Royal Infirmary

This is the most wonderful consultant I have ever met. I have throughout my life had to attend hospitals on many occasions both for myself and also for my son. I have met many consultants and most have been hard to understand and hard to communicate with. Overall, I find consultants to have an arrogance about them that does not make the patient feel comfortable. I had some problems with my eyes and was sent to see the consultant here. From that first appointment I realised I had met a very rare consultant who was not only highly skilled in this speciality, but who talked to me with respect, kindness, empathy and a total lack of arrogance. I understood all that my consultant was saying because they had the skill to pass on information and descriptions without using medical terminology that I could not grasp. I am more than happy with the treatment I have received because I have the knowledge that my consultant passed on to prepare me for what is happening to my eyes and what may be needed in the future. I also found the rest of the team to be approachable and emphatic when doing the tests needed. Other consultants could learn very much about how to treat patients in terms of respect and empathy from my consultant but they would not admit they needed to learn and that is why the majority are arrogant...they think they already know it all. They may medically in their own disciplines be excellent but many have zero communication skills in a clinical setting with patients. Thank you to my consultant and colleagues for treating me with respect and empathy and for never talking down to me because I did not understand things that I knew little or nothing about. So many consultants do talk down to patients and that is so wrong and makes the patient feel like they are stupid and a waste of their time. Once again thank you to those who did not make me feel like a waste of time and thank you for giving me the time and explanations to understand my treatment in such a clear way...without the use of all the medical jargon.
