"Disgusted with Lister during my labour experience!"

About: Lister Hospital

Hi, I came to Lister hospital on Thursday 19th March, as I thought my plug had come out. I then waited 3 hours in triage to be seen. When I was seen, it was by a male doctor, I did ask for a female but I would of had to wait longer as they were "short staffed". He done a swab test on me and it came back positive that I would go into labour within 2 weeks.. So I had to be admitted to Dacre ward (antenatal). I was very very very upset, fustrated and angry how the whole time I was on Dacre Ward, I was not listened too. I had terrible pains in my tummy and they were getting worse and worse.. I was told I had an "irritable uterus" however the pains got extremely unbareable early hours of monday night. By this point I had enough of the nurses not listening to me and the pain I was feeling... In the end I got out of my bed and went over to the desk and demanded to see a doctor. The nurse took forever to ring the doctor downstairs and when they eventually did it took the doctor 3 hours to come and see me. By this point it was 3 in the morning.... I knew something was going on and being a first time mum I had a feeling I was going into labour! They eventually took me down to the delivey suite, and I got examined.. I was 3CM dilated! There was a midwife who was looking after me who was the only person who made my awful experience at ease! Unfortunately they finished their shift at 3pm on Monday And didn't make it to see me give birtht to my beautiful son at 9.07pm, he was born 7 weeks premature and was taken straight to intensive care. So after being ignored on the way I was feeling with my body.. I then had to deal with the appalling staff in special care! My son was in special care for 2 weeks and I am very disgusted by the way he was treated. My and my boyfriend would visit him everyday as we lived in Welwyn garden city so had to get bus there and back... And we would find my son laying in his sick. The amount of nurses in the room, that would all sit around there table and talk about what they done on the weekend.. Instead of actually paying attention to the babies in there is disguisting. Just because a baby doesn't cry.. Does not mean there okay.. They need to make regular checks on the babies instead of leaving them lieing in there own sick like my son was. And to top it all off... Not one nurse bothered to notice my son had a very red, sore bottom that my boyfriend noticed. We told the nurse on shift and they were suprised to see how sore his bum was. They changed his bum every 3 hours.. How did they not notice this? It took days of putting vaseline and sudocream to heal it up. As a special care unit.. Nurses are meant to give there full attention to the babies and notice things before a parent does.. But no. Not at lister hospital. Maybe you should of spent less money doing up the hospital.. And employed better staff who pay attention and listen to women as women know there body's better then anyone..

We're really sorry that you feel so badly let down - if you have not done so already, then please do consider making a formal complaint. But in the meantime, we know that our new head of midwifery would very much like to speak with you - at the very least you and your boyfriends deserve the chance to talk through your experiences so that we can understand what went wrong for you and why. We know that many mothers and their families speak very highly of our maternity service, but clearly that has not been your experience - for which we are very sorry. But we would like yo wish you, your boyfriend and new baby boy every best wishes for the future, as well as thank you for frankness in providing your feedback on our maternity service.
