"Hysterectomy and care from ward 15"

About: Wansbeck Hospital

Hi, I was admitted on Wednesday 29th April for my hysterectomy, booked in at 7:40 am then taken to my bed where I was first on the list to go down. I changed into my flappy nighty lol, my sexy paper knickers and super sexy bed stockings which the nurse measured my calf to make sure I was given the correct size lol removed all jewellery then got into bed. Then I was given water and pain killers prior to surgery to make sure it was in my system. The nurses and consultant came around to explain the procedure, took blood pressure and other tests prior to surgery. Lovely friendly and caring staff so attentitive . Then I was on my way. Two nurses wheeled me to recovery room and explained this is my spot I will be in when I come out of surgery, a nurse stayed with me until the anaesthetist came and explained their job. I was well informed every step of the way. Next I'm in theatre having a cannular fitted to my left hand the sticky pads on my chest etc.....the op went well I woke up back in recovery with another lovely nurse taking care of me...... Then 40mins later I'm back on the ward.... Feeling a bit groggy after surgery but ok.....they gave me morphine for the pain which was wonderful but didn't taste so good lol. Back on ward I was asked if I wanted tea n toast or juice but I wasn't ready for that they gave me water instead . All this time my wonderful husband was by my side nipping out for occasional cigarette lol....bless him xxxx Then the nurse came n checked me over the keyhole went well however I developed a blood blister quite sore to touch under my right had stitches, just one of the things.....the consultant decided to take me back to theatre to remove this .. Fine....I was kept up to date all the time and knew what was going on... I spent a little longer in recovery than expected, think probably the double dose of anaesthetic lol but alls well Back on the ward the nurses are fab as always checking you over bringing you water Coffee and juice and biscuits and tea and toast. My hubby had coffee n tea too....so lovely . I honestly can't thank them enough and when I'm back on my feet in a few weeks time and able to get over I shall pop in to see them with a little gift and card..... Thank you to the loving and caring staff on ward 15 and Beth in recovery xxxx

Dear Karen, I just love your story of care - thanks for taking the time to share it. In amidst the humorous reflections you give our teams plenty of reasons to feel exceptionally proud of what they do every day . thank you. I am sorry we didn't help you to feel glamorous for your day in theatre (I know just what you mean about the gown, TED stockings and paper pants ...) but I am delighted that you got all the care, kindness and compassion you needed to recover well. Hope you are on top of the pain and that yoru hubby is feeling considerably less anxious now too ! Take great care and don't hesitate to get in touch if there's anything you need, Annie
