"Fibroid Surgery in Victor Bonney Ward...."

My review relates to the operation which I had in January 2015 at Queen Charlottes Hospital and I had a one-night stay in the Victor Bonney ward in recovery. I found the Victor Bonney ward clean and particularly the toilet and shower room - this is important when patients are recovering from surgery. The catering was also of a high standard with a friendly member of staff doing their rounds checking what patients wanted to have for their meals. I have recovered extremely well from the operation and took no pain killers upon returning home from the operation. Amazing. This may be related to the fact that I prepared myself for the operation both mentally and physically and lost weight before my keyhole surgery. There were three different nurses involved in my care during the 36 hour period. The concerns which I have relate to the fact that my consultant did not visit me either before or immediately after the operation. They decided to send their lovely Assistant instead who was friendly and reassuring but this is not the same as speaking to your own consultant doing the operation at a stressful time. I did get to see my consultant just before I entered the operating theatre but it was a little akward to discuss gynacological matters in front of others standing around me with my consultant outside the operating theatre. Perhaps the particular male consultant simply did not feel "comfortable" around so many women parading in their nightwear in the Victor Bonney ward! The particular consultant is considered to be outstanding in their field and while it is still too early to say, I am confident that the particular consultant did a brilliant job with my troublesome fiboids. They did also explain things to me to my satisfaction at two susequent appointments at Queen Charlottes Hospital Gynacology Outpatients. The nurse that looked after me during the night was attentive and professional. They even made me some lovely toast late in the evening because I felt unable to eat immediately after my operation. The nurse with me on my departure helped to carry my luggage downstairs on discharge so I could get a cab - my dad had just had his 18th car accident around that time! The only concerns I have is the fact that it can be difficult to sleep when four women are sharing a ward although I am aware that there is generally a shortage of space in NHS hospitals and this situation still fared better than at other NHS hospitals. The fact that my consultant did not visit me in the ward prior to my operation also made me a little nervy and jittery before the operation. However, he had done an excellent job with the surgery itself. On the whole my experience of having fibroid surgery had been a relatively smooth one and my consultant was patient with the many questions that I had for him in connection with the surgery and its risks/benefits. Therefore, I would highly recommend this hospital for the high calibre of its staff and facilities onsite. Well done Queen Charlottes!
