Having watched my 80+ year old mum spend time on the ward having fractured her neck of femur, as a nurse myself I am appalled. My mum was there for over 7 days and never once was she offered assistance to shower or wash her hair. I ended up providing this care. Her bottom was never wiped when visiting the toilet and she had asked staff and still it was not done. She found this upsetting and humiliating. I had daily washing to do as her knickers were marked as a result of this, Her dressing was dirty. The medical staff advised that it needed changing but I was told by sister that that increased the risk of infection and she would check it later. It never got checked or changed. The toilet was dirty. I would be mortified if this took place on my ward. Some staff were lovely, however others left a lot to be desired. Agency staff did not seem to be aware what mum was doing - visiting the toilet or using commode.
