"My first experience as an in-patient of NHS"

About: Conquest Hospital

I was rushed to the Cardiac Unit by ambulance following a suspected heart attack. The ambulance crew had called ahead and on arrival I was taken straight in the Cath Lab for urgent treatment. The staff introduced themselves to me and explained what was about to happen. I found this very calming and reassuring. After treatment I was taken up to the CCU where my condition was closely monitored. During the five days I was there I found that the nursing staff, who continually worked flat out, still managed to find the time and compassion to wipe the sweat and the odd tear away and ensure I had that extra blanket if I needed it. I cannot imagine the quality of care could have been improved in any way (other than perhaps additional staff to share the work load). I was totally surprised by the quality and choice of food available. A vast improvement on what I had seen when visiting people in previous years. I feel the quality of care helped with the speed of my recovery and discharge from the hospital. All in all this experience has shown the NHS at its best and I will be badgering politicians not to sell it off.
