I attended a Gynea appointment as an outpatient which always runs very late, hours late at times. I understand that this is always possible due to emergencies, but if this happens at every appointment then there seems a lack of planning which in turn makes consultations feel pressured and a rush. At the end of the appointment I saw a nurse last who went through a form ready for a surgical procedure in the Day Case Unit scheduled in a few weeks. One good thing is that the appointments for surgery are always fairly quick, ie, a few weeks. During this nurse conversation I advised the nurse that I was dieting and so weight would to be done at the Day Case to ensure accuracy, and also, in all the stress of the wait and rushed consultation, I could not recall my medication, and so I said I would bring this in with me at the Day Case. So.. arrived at Day Case Gynea Unit for procedure and general anesthetic. Saw consultant who is great. Saw anesthetist who didn't want to weigh me (no explanation), and didn't want to see my prescription with my medications (no explanation). Also, because of this lack of conversation, no advice about the gastric reflux medication, which previous anesthetists are always keen to get right due to the risk of acid entering the lungs under anesthetic - this one not really interested. On the ward itself no checks made, eg putting name band on, checking procedure at time of entry into theater as to confirm who I was or what I was there for. Just got the feeling no one really cared, just like a conveyor belt. After operation nursing staff very mixed. Some great, others extremely poor. Dignity not maintained and poor nursing staff not interested. It is so strange when the consultant is so friendly and thorough, that the rest of their team are so hit and miss, the quality is just not consistent and they really let the experience down big time. There is no formal discharge on this ward, you get chewed up and spat out basically. No one told me of the side effects of the medications given, or how the procedure had gone. This department would benefit from some questionnaires given to patients so that better monitoring can take place. There is something desperately wrong that the quality can fluctuate so much and womens experiences vary consistently. I thought I had just fallen on a bad day in this department, care wise, but it is clear from these mixed reviews that there are serious problems and I believe it is the duty of those responsible to be named and put on the spot about what they are doing to make everyones experience acceptable, given that the writing is literally, on the wall.
