"District Nurses and communication"

About: Glenrothes Hospital

(as a relative),

My mother has incontinence issues and as she has health issues she is visited on a fortnightly basis by District Nurses. The home care staff had raised with me that mum should be getting incontinence products on prescription instead of me purchasing Tena pants. I contacted their office and as always it was the answering machine. I explained my enquiry and a sheet to monitor mum's fluid and faeces was left to be completed by the home carers - no note of where it came from but we assumed the district nurses had left it. Once completed it then vanished and the next thing after several weeks a large number of incontinence pads appeared at mum's. To date I have had no information from the district nurses, nor have the home carers and it has been left to me to try to source the specialist types of underwear where the pads can be secured rather than using normal underwear. I have now tracked down several websites who offer these items but this has taken months and in the meantime I dread to think how much money has been spent on buying products so that mum can have some quality of life.

Surely it wouldn't hurt district nurses to have the courtesy to call me back and explain what was going on.

Dear Mollie 8

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your mother's situation. It must be hard enough dealing with the physical changes without having to deal with such additional stressors. This issue of communication in a situation like this is critical and it is very disappointing that you have as yet bee unable to discuss the matter with the district nurses. If you contact me directly I will try to ensure this happens sooner rather than later. It would be good to resolve the issue and I think the way to do that is to establish the contact directly.

Please do consider contacting me. My details are 01592 648153.

Regards

Louise Ewing

Dear Mollie 8

The District Nursing Team Lead was in contact with me within the last few days to ask if you had been in touch, as she was very concerned having just read your post. She is disappointed not to have not had the opportunity to address your concerns directly and is keen to establish that things are in place for your mother and to make sure that you are able to contact the service if you have any problems.

The offer to contact us remains open so please feel free to call me directly on 01592 648153 so that I can pass on your details to the District Nursing Team Lead.

Kind regards

Louise Ewing
