"Cancelled appointment"

My son has an infection in his right toe (possible ingrown toenail), Two months ago we made an appointment at our local GP to get it looked at. He prescribed antibiotics and the infection cleared but once the course of antibiotics had finished the infection came back. once again back to the GP and another prescription for the same antibiotics, same again, course finished and infection came back.

Another appointment made, couldn't give same antibiotics again as two courses is the maximum but took a swab and sent it for analysis also referred to hospital specialist for which we had to wait for an appointment.

One week later swab tests concluded it was a different type of infection as first thought and he could have different antibiotics prescribed in the meantime the hospital appointment came through.

Some weeks later we attended the hospital only to be be told the appointment had been cancelled and referred to another department, nobody had told us this, my son had to miss part of an important exam for this appointment, I had to book a day off work and my wife had to take two hours out of work as well, all for nothing, so later (£3 parking fee out of pocket and a wasted holiday day for myself) I phoned my GP who should have informed me of the appointment change and the receptionist told me the person who deals with this is not in till Friday (today is Wednesday).

So is this going to be another month for an appointment, another day off for either my Wife, Son and me? this is seems so long and drawn out for what it is, I'm in the dark now as much as I was when this all started.
