"I was admitted healthily and left a and e with a..."

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

My GP phoned me last Monday and told me to go to a and e due to high potassium volume in my body 6.6. I reported to AMU and the consultant l was told to see was not available. I had to report back to a and e reception and they sent me to a waiting room, where l sat with snifflers, coughers, patients being sick. I had no problem with the nursing staff but the room was an absolute disgrace, bin overflowing, sick bowls and tissues on floor, empty coffee cups on floor, plastic drinking cups everywhere and the triage nurse doing the cleaning whilst treating patients. The next day l was throwing up sick and diarrhoea from the other end. I had caught a virus on top of the chest infection and high potassium count l was originally sent there for.

Thank you for your review about your recent visit to the A&E Department. I am really sorry to hear about the poor environment you found there. A&E has been exceptionally busy over the last week, leading to the hospital being on the highest Alert level for several days. Naturally, many of the people attending will present with the type of symptoms you mention. Of course, there is no excuse for not keeping the area clean and tidy and I will be forwarding your comments to the Lead Nurse for A&E and the Housekeeping Manager so that they can take these forward. I am glad the nursing staff treated you well and hope you have now recovered from the virus. Andrew Harvey Patient Advice & Liaison Service Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals
