"I fail to understand why the eye ..."

About: Southampton General Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I fail to understand why the eye hospital is so lacking in basic deaf awareness. I fail to understand why the doctors are so lacking in basic understanding of fears of patients when instruments are so near parients' eyes. Why do I never see the same doctor twice? Why do I never see a doctor with good lip patterns?

What could be improved

All staff need to look at patients and speak clear English. Staff should make appointments after consultations. Why is it not possible to make an appointment so at least we have some choice. Why are appointments cancelled with no explanation/

Thank you for posting this comment. We feel it is very important to make sure all patients are able to use our services fully, and we do have guidelines for all our staff on communicating clearly. We are sorry if this was not your experience on this occasion, and we have passed your comment on to the Eye Unit managers. If you would like to contact us to change an appointment time that you have been given, we are able to take phone calls from textphones. We can also arrange for a sign language interpreter to come to appointments, if you let us know in advance. Please just use the number on your appointment card or letter. Please get in touch with our Patient Advice and Liaison (PALS) team on 023 8079 8498 or email pals@suht.swest.nhs.uk if you would like us to look into your specific experience in more detail.
