I was referred to general surgery Ward 10 by my gp as I had (and still have) an abscess which requires drainage. I arrived at 6pm and was told I would be "looked at in 5 or 10 mins" The doctor and nurse who both told me this information had not appeared again 1 hour later. I was in severe discomfort and was hungry and dehydrated, I then went to look for someone to help and was basically looked through as though I was not standing there by desk staff. Eventually a nurse again says "someone will see you in 10 mins, if not come and find me" After another 20 or so mins I went to find the nurse and found they were attempting to go off shift and probably had no intention of following up my query. It was now 8pm and the excuse was, the doctors are handing over now so you might have to wait a "few more hours" The worse part was the nurses comment that I came in "late" so that's why I'm waiting. Late? I had my Drs appt at 5 and went straight to the hospital as advised, how dare you try and make me feel as though it was my fault. I was not seen by a Dr by 8.30 and left as the discomfort I was experiencing sitting in a waiting room, throbbing pain with no food, water or adequate communication was far more disturbing than going home and bearing the pain with my own painkillers. The service is totally unacceptable, waiting is part and parcel of the nhs but so is communication and patient wellbeing.
"Total Waste Of Time"
