I would like to thank the brilliant orthopaedic consultant surgeon and their team for dealing with my condition so quickly and expertly. I have been to the GP on and off for several years with a stiff neck but was referred to the Royal London in March after a MRI scan was eventually recommended for me, which revealed a damaged disc putting pressure on my spinal chord. The registrar I saw ran some tests which the consultant surgeon verified and told me that I needed immediate surgery to replace a disc in my neck. Just over a week later they operated successfully and I am recovering well, despite still being in shock from discovering I needed major surgery. Although I was fitted in as an emergency which meant that I did not get a bed until after my operation, I received high quality care from the nurses and doctors that looked after me in the ward as well as the staff who looked after me pre and post theatre. The nurse in recovery was even kind enough to call my husband down to the recovery room to see me as I knew they would be worried I had not come back to the ward. The surgeon also took the time to explain to him how the operation had gone and reassured him. The porters were kind and efficient and I was astonished at how many different cleaners came into the ward throughout the day to clean - the walls were even cleaned when I was there. I stayed in the hospital 2 nights and although I felt very unwell it was overall a very positive experience. I am immensely grateful to the NHS for the care I received and feel privileged to have been treated by my orthopaedic surgeon and their team.
