"Carer kept waiting at Royal Bolton"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I found blood in my urine and so was treated at the Urology Department at Royal Bolton. The doctor and nursing staff were all kind and helpful. However, because of a booking error I was at the hospital most of the day. I was told we will try to fit you in. As a full time carer, I got very stressed knowing I had to be back home at a certain time.

I was informed that I would have to have an X Ray and a colosophy (sorry - camera examination into bladder), but today nobody told me I would have to have an internal. I should have been warned and not just rushed in.

A major problem for myself and I should imagine many others is, as a full time carer not very much consideration is given regarding our time. I have a care worked once sometimes twice a week to look after my charge to allow me to get out for shopping any medical appointments, etc. Her time is limited so if I am not seen on time I simply have to leave without treatment and have to make further appointments - which can take weeks. This happened to me twice recently.

Why can't something be done, across the board, about this problem? We are under a lot of stress as is it - this just adds to it.

We apologise that we have not been as flexible as needed for your appointments regarding your other responsibilities as a full time carer. We are very sorry that you had to leave early without treatment. May I suggest that for any future clinical appointments that you contact our PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) officer who could perhaps liaise with the outpatients team to ensure that you are seen within an agreed timeframe to enable you to meet your carer responsibilities.
