"Care in surgical assessment unit (SAU) William Harvey Hospital"

About: William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) / General surgery

(as a relative),

Mum was referred up to SAU by GP.

They were expecting her and quickly settled her, taking bloods, siting a cannula and calling for the doctor to review.

The Doctor arrived promptly, introduced himself and undertook an examination. He requested an X-Ray and mum was taken by a member of staff in a wheelchair. Again swift prompt service in X -Ray.

Review by Doctor, decision for USS, appointment booked and USS undertaken and reported on swiftly.

Review by Doctor and decision made.

The service was prompt, patient focused and have a definitive decision quickly. An admission to hospital was avoided.

If I were to suggest an improvement it would be for the staff area to be sectioned off and we could see all of the patient names, and scan results. Privacy was not maintained at all times due to the discussions that the staff had in this area.

The nursing staff did not introduce themselves by name but did treat my mum, and me, with kindness and respect. The male healthcare assistant was particularly kind and helpful. The Doctor was kind, clear, and involved us both in decision making and this was really appreciated.
