"unprofessional staff and patiant confidentiality"

About: Pilgrim Hospital

i am ment to be coming in to pilgrim hospital for a operation soon but have been really put of by the staff that work here due to the lack of patient confidentiality as certain staff think it is ok to discuss patients and their treatment with other members of the public not only that they also used the patients full names in the middle of a full swimming pool I certainly am concerned as I don't want my business told to the whole world and also feel that my information is not safe this is not the first time these members of staff have done this either they do it everytime they are in the swimming pool as I have heard them on a number of occasions I think this is a absolute disgrace and is very upsetting

Dear Anon

I was really shocked to read your posting and can fully appreciate your anxiety; I would feel exactly the same way as you. It is clear that you have seen and heard these staff on other occasions – would you please contact me – in confidence at: jennie.negus@ulh.nhs.uk so I can understand some detail. The behaviour you have described is totally unacceptable and needs to be dealt with – I assure you this will be done without exposing you. Alongside dealing with this I want to try and regain your confidence for your forthcoming operation – again if you contact me I can perhaps have someone from PALS talk to you – or the matron for surgery support you and reassure you – it is scary enough coming in for an operation without having this added worry.

Please do get in touch.

Dear anon

I hope you don't mind me posting another response to your story but after reading it again and your mention of a swimming pool I believe your comments are in relation to the physio pools at one of our hospitals and I have have the following response from the acute trust lead physiotherapist.

"What you describe is in no way acceptable behaviour by any member of staff in the Trust or in the Physiotherapy Department. I would be most grateful if you would contact me personally and give me details of dates and times. I need to prevent this happening, but will of course keep your involvement confidential. Please do not let this stop you having an operation which is necessary for your health and well-being. I can only say how sorry I am that you have found it necessary to complain, but I do thank you for doing so. I will be taking action to stop this immediately"
