About: Kettering General Hospital

My son has Cerebal Palsy Spastic Diplegia and therefore has had a few stays on Skylark Ward. The first time we visited was in Feb2014 and he needed an MRI scan and was put to sleep. Everything was explained to us well and Riley was kept busy by his wonderful play therapist. Apart from a little trouble getting a canuala in his hand which was clearly upsetting him it was decided an alternative way to put him to sleep would be usedz After the procedure he was monitored closely and we were able to go home. Staff were lovely nurses were brilliant and the and all in all no issues. Another time we were on Skylark was October 2014 when he needed Botox injection in to his legs again quite a simple procedure but he needed to be put to sleep. From the second we arrived everything was good. Doctors explained everything that was going to happen. Nurses were caring and attentive and play therapists again kept Our little boy happy and entertained. After what happened last time with the anaesthetic we explained our concern to the anaesthetist who listened and didn't even try a canuala and decided to wait till he was asleep again using an alternative way. Again when he started to wake up we were sent for straight away he was watched and monitored closely before being allowed to go home. Another excellent case of great care. Iv never known a child not want to leave hospital. He was also admitted in the middle of the night once with a very bad viral infection and dehydration. It was about 3am we arrived on the ward and a nurse was waiting for us. They got us settled and then we waited for a Dr who came in about 20 min later. They done their checks etc and then left us all to get some rest. He eventually fell asleep and the nurses left him to it. Which we were thankful for he finally fell asleep we didn't want him woken up unecessarily. I didn't find the place a ghost town there is buzzers in all the rooms and if we every needed anyone someone was there. This is just 3 occasions when we have been admitted but each time has been equally brilliant. Skylark is a wonderful place and a lot of work clearly goes in to keep the exceptional standards. Thank you to all of you for the amazing work you do we are lucky to have the NHS and the great things you do even though you are clearly stretched.

Thank you very much for your lovely comments regarding the Skylark Ward. The team endeavour to provide a high standard of care for each child on each admission. We realise coming into hospital can be stressful for both the child and family so providing things to do, working closely with the family and other departments means that the child’s needs are always our first concern. We hope that your son continues to stay well but if he does need to be admitted in the future I am sure the team will continue to make his stay as comfortable as possible.
