"Life on Ward 10"

About: Wansbeck Hospital

I was originally admitted to Wansbeck Ward 10 on 1st February 2015, suffering from severe abdominal pain. From the outset the staff were friendly, supportive and very very caring. During my 10 day stay, I was made to feel like I was the only patient they had to deal with, nothing was too much trouble for either the Ward Sister, the nursing staff, the support staff, and even the domestic staff would go out of their way to ensure I was made comfortable. I wish I could name some of the nursing staff who were outstanding, but to me, they all were! On watching how they treated the more difficult patients, I was amazed at their constant care and concern towards these people, and where most people would have been driven to distraction, they maintained a friendly and professional air. I was very impressed. I later came back on March 3rd to have a major operation, and once again found myself on Ward 10. Not only did the staff remember who I was, but I was treated like a long lost friend. Again, I had nothing but the best care a patient could have. On my down days, they cheered me up, on my up days they cheered me on. I was encouraged at all levels and I believe it was this care that has me returned to almost full health at a much earlier stage. The Ward was spotless, and the domestic staff worked extremely hard to keep it that way, taking obvious pride in their work, and working with a fabulous cheerfulness. I hope I never have to receive intense medical care again, but if I do, I'm opting for Wansbeck. A millions stars to all of them, especially one Sister who was also supportive after I returned home and needed to speak to someone.

Dear Gwynne, Can I thank you for making my day by providing us with this delightful feedback. The level of care and attention you describe, the kindness and compassion of our nurses and the commitment of our hard working domestic staff - these are all things that really matter to us. I am so pleased that the team on ward 10 were able to deliver care in a way that enabled you to feel like you were the only patient on the ward - we know how important this is and difficult too sometimes when our wards are very busy. It is lovely to hear how ward 10 have this down to a fine art. I think my favourite line is the bit about when you were down they cheered you up and when you were up they cheered you on - fantastic stuff. I hope you don't mind if I steal it and use it again in one of our training sessions to describe the kind of care we want to provide to all our patients, always. It can be really tough recovering from major surgery so I hope this is going well for you. I'm glad the ward sister has already reached out to provide you with support when you needed it but please don't hesitate to come back to us if there's anything else you need. Thanks again - the team will gratefully receive your million stars and be thrilled to know what a difference they made. Annie
