"Rude doctor and the difficulty in getting an appointment"

About: NHS Fife

(as a relative),

My mother called Kelty Medical Practice one morning in late March to ask for an appointment as she had a bad chest infection and had been up most of the night struggling for breath. She has a very bad chest anyway and knew she had to see someone that day. The receptionist told her there were no appointments available so my mother said they would have to send a doctor out for a home visit as she needed to be seen. They put her through to the secretary who asked the necessary questions and she told her the GP would be out between 9-1. Later in the morning a doctor called her to ask why she had requested a home visit, my mother explained she had had a chest infection since December which was not clearing after antibiotics but had been up all night struggling for breath and knew the infection was back. The doctor told her this was not a good enough reason for a home visit! Mother explained she only had one lung and had asked for an appointment but was told there were none available so had asked for a home visit, she said she was not in the habit of asking for a visit and always made the effort to attend the surgery. She knew that if she did not get seen that day and the infection got worse it could turn really nasty given her history! The doctor said again it was not a good enough reason, mother said what reason warranted a visit - did you have to be dead? The doctor replied "we do not do house calls for dead people" and told her to go the surgery at 11. 30. Mother said excuse me I asked for an appointment but was told there were none so how all of a sudden could he find one, do they just magic them out of thin air! The doctor replied " look, you either come up at 11. 30 or you don't" and slammed the phone down on her.

Dear Pusskat

Thank you for taking the time to share your mother's experience which was not a pleasant read, I do hope your mother has now been seen. I have passed your post on to the Practice and have sought a response from them. I will get back to you once I hear back from them.

Regards

Louise Ewing

Dear Pusskat By way of an update, I heard back from the practice manager who believes she recognises this. The practice are keen to respond to you directly but have also taken the opportunity to share your experience with the GPs at a recent practice meeting. Thanks again for your post. Regards Louise Ewing
