"2nd scan"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital

I agreed to have my second scan on Easter Sunday as the department was so busy. Big mistake. My scan was rushed and the picture doesn't even look like a baby. Usually the second scan is clearer but my first scan was better. I left the hospital in tears and have not been able to stop crying since. For what was meant to be a joyous occasion was ruined by someone who couldn't be bothered to get a picture maybe because they were working on a bank holiday. Wish I had gone to Manchester North. Is it too late to change?

We’re very sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your experience of your baby’s scan at Easter. The scans are for screening for abnormality and the clarity of the image is largely dependent on the position of the baby but can be affected by other factors. Even improving the image quality for diagnostic purposes may not necessarily improve the image for a souvenir. We can assure you that the service women received at Easter was no different to that offered at other times – the scans were booked and undertaken at 30 minute intervals in line with national guidance. As we have had a large number of women requiring scans, a Sonographer volunteered to come in at Easter – we don’t usually have scans on bank holidays – to ensure that the procedures were undertaken at the optimum time in pregnancy. If you wish to discuss your concerns further, please contact our Patient Advisory and Liaison Service in the first instance on 01204 390193.
