"great clinical care but cleanliness could be better at Royal Bolton"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital

(as the patient),

The medical, surgical and nursing care at BRH is first rate.

However, many visitors do not follow the hygiene protocols.

I think such people should be fined.

I also think the ward floors should be disinfected 2 or 3 times in 24 hours. There are bodily fluids visible on the floors, which are not dealt with by the cleaners.

We are sorry that you were not happy with the standards of cleanliness. We continually carry out awareness campaigns so that both staff and members of the public are reminded of the need for good hygiene. Domestic staff work to a cleaning specification that sets out the frequencies for cleaning tasks. For example, toilets and wash rooms are cleaned thoroughly twice per day, once in a morning and again in the evening, with a further check carried out in the early afternoon and cleaning carried out then if needed. Generally, domestic staff use a microfibre mopping and cleaning system. The staff first dust-control mop the floor to remove all loose dust and debris using disposable cloths attached to a flat mop handle. The mops are soaked in a measured dose of cleaning solution before being used. Microfibre is designed to attract dust and dirt and hold them in the fibres of the mop until it is laundered. Clean mops and cloths are used in each room. This cleaning system has been widely introduced throughout the National Health Service following research that showed it was more effective than the traditional mop and bucket.

We have recently introduced an information card for patients confirming that patient bed areas are cleaned appropriately before each patient is admitted. This is signed by the admitting nurse.
