"Occupational Therapy: Joint Protection"

About: Hemel Hempstead Hospital

I was referred via CROPS to a rheumatologist, who confirmed I have arthritis in my thumb joints. I did not want injections, and instead saw a hand occupational therapist, who gave me a lot of information, a sheet of exercises and thumb splints. They referred me to Joint Protection classes, two afternoon sessions aimed at keeping the disease at bay, and living reasonably comfortably with it. I was given two different pairs of hand supports, which have complemented the thumb splints. All three are useful for various purposes. The whole process was so worthwhile. The staff were excellent, and it was good to share experiences with others in the class. I have referred to the information pack a few times since the classes. I have gone from feeling a bit helpless about my condition to being empowered. My pain has reduced. Thank you to all concerned.
